Creative Therapy, Creating Change

These are challenging times for our profession, as we adapt to past and future changes prompted by managed care, healthcare reform and a struggling economy. Join us July 15-17 for AMHCA’s 2010 Annual Conference in a city that historically has embraced and fomented change—Boston!
Since once again our country and our profession of mental health counseling are going through change, the theme we have chosen for AMHCA’s 2010 conference is, “Creative Therapy, Creating Change!”
Now, more then ever, we need to find creative ways to encourage positive and healthy change in our clients and our students. You can count on AMHCA to line up wonderful, well-known speakers and authors to inspire us to continue our search for new and innovative ways to create change through our work.

Announcements:

Congratulations to Nikol Bowen, new President-Elect of OMHCA for the 2010-11 year. A PC with experience working in mental health agencies, schools and in non-profit organizations where she coordinated membership efforts, Nikol has also volunteered over 5000 hours advocating for mental health in Ohio. On the OMHCA Board for three years, she has served as secretary and as newsletter editor. Ms. Bowen is dedicated to speaking on behalf of the association and mental health issues in Ohio. She is a firm believer in the power of numbers and plans to continue to move forward with the agenda of the current president: increasing the visibility of the association by recruiting new members, enhancing professional development opportunities offered by OMHCA and lobbying for legislation to improve access to mental health care in Ohio. Thank you for voting!

Voice of Ohio Veterans and Families / Counselors:

Please consider completing this Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH) survey regarding availability of mental health services to veterans. OCA members and counselors in Ohio have been advocating for professional counselors to be hired by the VA for years. This survey is one more way to make our voices heard.

Question #22 / #23 - provides an open end question where you could let ODMH know about the struggles LPC/PCC's have in providing mental health services to other veterans (e.g., as a veteran and a licensed counselor, you may have had difficulty getting hired to work in the Veterans Administration / or family members have not been able to see a mental health profession - because of lack of availability - hiring LPC's or PCC's could help).

See below for more information.

The Ohio Department of Mental Health and the Multiethnic Advocates for Cultural Competence are conducting a survey on providing mental health services to veterans and active members of the military. OCA members might want to participate in the survey and let ODMH know the struggles LPC and LPCCs have to provide the services and how important expanding access is to these individuals.
